I didn’t like Oceanic when it first came out. Actually, I didn’t like Isis when Oceanic came out. I had heard of them, but this record was the talk of the town when post-metal began to appear on my radar. I hated it. I hated that everyone talked about it which made me hate it more. I hated Isis, I hated Neurosis, I hated doom/sludge, just anything in this vein was worthless to me. Shit, the most post-metal-ish song on one of my favorite records of all time (”The Triumph” on Entheogen) was the most skipped song of all time. Something began to infect me, though, almost like a Field of Dreams apparition seeping into my brain saying “there’s something so heavy and crushing about post-metal and your dumb ass just isn’t getting it.” So I asked a friend where I should start and he said “Glisten” off of Celestial. After that destroyed me I listened to “Aeon” off of Through Silver In Blood. Then I stopped skipping “The Triumph”. Eventually my post-metal library began to grow and I came back to Oceanic. I still preferred Celestial, almost infinitely more so, but I started to enjoy songs like “Weight” and this track^ which brought me around to giving Oceanic the attention it deserved. I’d still rank it in the middle of the Isis catalog, though I know I’m in the minority, but at least I appreciate it now in a way I just couldn’t understand at its release.
