I Woke Up Like This: Engine Down – “Patent on the Better”

This week I’ve been listening to a playlist of albums that more or less changed my life chronologically (based on when they affected me, not when they came out). Not really in a spiritual or path altering way, but more like a shift in my listening habits or filled an emotional need at the time. I think “Intent to Pacify” was the first Engine Down song I heard, so To Bury Within the Sound became my introduction to them. This record greatly influenced my indie rock rabbit hole. Almost everything I listen to in this vein, Boilermaker, Minus the Bear, Logh, The Life and Times, and even a lot of instrumental post-rock can be traced to my acceptance of this band. I know I’ve said it here before, but it bears repeating, bands break up every day and, most times, I don’t give a shit, but I truly miss Engine Down. I was also excited to find out that Lovitt Records finally put their catalog up on Spotify. There are so many bands I need to revisit that I haven’t listened to in 15 years.
